Jimmy Smith suspended 4 games for violation of NFL's substance abuse policy

National Football League suspended Ravens CB Jimmy Smith four games for violating the policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Smith, 29, chose to drop his appeal and begin serving his suspension immediately after being injured in the 44-20 victory over the Detroit Lions.

The suspension does include the ramification of a loss of four games' pay, so the decision to drop the appeal is far from inconsequential, but Smith restructured his contract and only has a minimum base salary this year.

Smith also suffered a season-ending injury late past year, but the team feels more comfortable in their depth this time around.

In 12 games this season, Smith has recorded 28 tackles, three interceptions and nine passes defended.

As Schefter mentioned, Smith will not try to appeal the suspension, a practical move since he'll be able to undergo the punishment right away even while he's recuperating from the injury.

Smith is the Ravens' third player to test positive for a banned substance this season.

Smith had to deal with a sore Achilles for much of the season and it has led many to wonder if it had contributed to the tear.

Smith, a first-round draft pick in 2011, has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. He has only played two full 16-game seasons in seven years. Smith would then have been eligible for the postseason if Baltimore made the playoffs. Smith will miss a total of 17 games over the past four seasons. Rookie Marlon Humphrey, a first-round pick out of Alabama, is expected to start opposite Brandon Carr when the Ravens visit the Steelers on Sunday. The Ravens (7-5) now occupy the AFC's second wild card spot.
