The chippy, one-sided series included a sequence in which Boise State linebacker Tyson Maeva threw a punch at OR wide receiver Dillon Mitchell, who responded by backhanding cornerback Avery Williams.

Oregon's all-time leading rusher, Royce Freeman, has decided he will not play in Saturday's Las Vegas Bowl, new head coach Mario Cristobal announced Thursday.

Perhaps Cristobal, who was promoted to replace Willie Taggart on December 8, can take some solace in the fact that things turned out pretty well for Kelly at OR away from the blue turf.

In 11 games this season, Benoit carried 80 times for 573 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Despite not having Freeman, Cristobal said the Ducks (7-5) "have a pretty impressive stable of running backs" who "have a tremendous opportunity" Saturday in Vegas against the 10-3 Broncos.

OR had four punts and four turnovers through its first eight drives of the game.

It started during the game with color analyst Kirk Herbstreit inferring that Oregon's slow start against Boise State - it trailed 24-0 before going into the locker room down 24-14 - was due to Freeman trying to rile up his teammates beforehand.

OR quarterback Justin Herbert completed 26-of-36 pass attempts for 233 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

On 1st-and-goal from the Ducks' 7-yard-line, cornerback Tyree Robinson intercepted Rypien's pass in the end zone, and he returned it all the way back.

We can only hope the second half is half as exciting as the first.
