NFL taking over investigation into allegations about Panthers owner Jerry Richardson
The team announced Friday was under investigation, but declined to provide any details.
Confirmation of the investigation also appeared on NFL.com, which cited NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The news comes in the wake of a Sports Illustrated report that Richardson made sexually inappropriate comments to female employees and reached settlements on both sexual and racial allegations. Overseeing the probe originally was minority owner and former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles, but the investigation now will be handled exclusively by the NFL. "We have work to do to achieve this goal, but we are going to meet it".
On Sunday NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email to Reuters that the league would conduct the investigation, confirming reports on NFL.com and other outlets.
Drummond told The Associated Press because the matter is under legal review, the Panthers can not comment publicly on the specifics of the allegations.
Richardson's conduct was treated as something of a running office joke, according to multiple former Panthers team employees who spoke to Sports Illustrated on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation.
Richardson attended the game Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers at Bank of America Stadium and was photographed sitting beside his long-time wife Rosalind in his luxury box.
The Panthers posted a statement from Richardson on their website late Sunday in which the franchise's only owner said it was "time to turn the franchise over to new ownership". "I have enormous respect for the man, but will wait for the results of the investigation before making any judgment".
The SI story, if true, I believe will serve to oust Richardson one way or another from the team that he founded and which he has owned since the Panthers began play in 1995. And we have played in two Super Bowls.
This is not one glass of red wine dumped on a crisp white dress shirt like the ones Richardson favors. He received the new heart on February 1, 2009, and has not had any known setbacks since. Panthers no longer involved. He has owned the Panthers since their inception and is the only current NFL owner to have played in the league.
Richardson widely remains behind the scenes as the Panthers owner, but he has been in controversial situations in both recent and distant memory.
