'Sicario 2: Soldado' Trailer: Benicio Del Toro Returns to Fight the Drug Cartels (Without Emily Blunt)

Sony just dropped the teaser trailer for Sicario 2: Soldado which it is releasing via its Columbia Pictures banner on June 29, 2018. This time, the sequel focuses on Benicio del Toro's Alejandro, who was a force of nature in the first film.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer propels the story forward and retains much of the same visual and tonal style from Denis Villeneuve's first film. Now, Alejandro and Graver are operating with no oversight.

SOLDADO, the drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. It's wholly felt in the absence of Emily Blunt, who acted as an audience surrogate in the film as well as the ultimate failed moral compass.

Unfortunately, Emily Blunt will not be returning for this hard-edged sequel, but one could argue that her character arc was essentially finished, while del Toro's character still had more room to grow.

Soldado, which means soldier, is directed by Stefano Sollima from a script by original scribe Taylor Sheridan.

When asked where the human factor will come into play in "Soldado", del Toro responded, "I think it comes from the character of Isabelle, which is played by Isabella Moner". That's not to say the production value is bad, or that Brolin and del Toro are phoning in their performances. And as evident here, he brings a lot of punch to this latest story in the Sicario universe. You can see exclusive new photos there, but we have the full trailer for you here to watch in all it's uninterrupted glory.
