WannaCry cyberattack: US says it has evidence North Korea was 'directly responsible'

The U.S. government is publicly acknowledging that North Korea was behind the WannaCry computer worm that affected more than 230,000 computers in more than 150 countries earlier this year.

"We do not make this allegation lightly", he added.

Trump's homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, will make the announcement in an op-ed to be published Monday evening and will follow up with a statement Tuesday morning.

"It was cowardly, costly and careless", he wrote. "The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible".

Bossert wrote that North Korea's "malicious behavior" has gone on for years and is growing more egregious. "And so we don't have a lot of room left here to apply pressure to change their behavior".

Bossert didn't say what specific actions the USA might take against North Korea, but he said it was important to call out the bad behavior.

The May 12 global cyber attack affected critical sectors, including health care, "potentially putting lives at risk", said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a move not yet public. "Our adversaries are not distinguishing between public and private so neither should we. government and industry must work together, now more than ever, if we are serious about improving our collective defense".

But some Democrats wondered why the Trump administration was so eager to aggressively confront North Korea when it has shown no such enthusiasm in challenging Russian Federation, which several intelligence agencies have concluded hacked sensitive materials to help swing the 2016 election.

The U.K. government in October blamed North Korea for the attack on the NHS.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Until now, the USA government has not publicly stated as much.

According to The Washington Post, Democratic officials in the United States have criticised the Trump administration's response to North Korea's activities, saying that the U.S. government has handled the news differently in comparison to the Russian online interference revelations.

The National Security Agency and British government have both expressed their beliefs that North Korea was behind the attack. The country probably employs 1,700 state-sponsored hackers, backed by more than 5,000 support staff, according to ASPI. The rogue nation, which has developed increasingly sophisticated electronic weapons, has demonstrated its cyberprowess on the world stage before: It hacked Sony Pictures in 2014, leading to sanctions from the Obama administration.
