Kremlin calls new U.S. security strategy "imperial"

China and Russia hit back at ‘imperial’ U.S. security strategy

"Otherwise, it will harm others as well as itself, " Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, before urging the U.S.to "meet with China halfway".

The U.S. national security strategy unveiled on December 18 says that China and Russian Federation "challenge American power, influence, and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity".

"We can not agree with an attitude that sees our country as a threat to the US", Peskov said.

However, the spokesman said the document also contained "some modest positive points", including a willingness to cooperate in areas that correspond to US interests.

"China will resolutely safeguard its sovereignty, security and right to develop", she said.

China insists its trade with America is a mutually beneficial process, and hopes both countries can cooperate to promote global peace.

Contrary to the latest rapprochement between the United States and People's Republic of China, the new document asserts an aggressive stance towards America's key trading partner.

"This unilateralism, zero-sum mentality and shirking of global responsibilities makes it harder to win respect and trust from other countries", Xinhua said, adding that the approach "renders it impossible to garner enough moral appeal and worldwide influence to realize its own interests and security pursuits".

"This strategy recognises that whether we like it or not, we are engaged in a new era of competition", Mr Trump said.

The Chinese embassy in Washington, in a statement on its website, urged the U.S. to seek common ground while respecting differences.

It also criticised what it said was the "imperialist character" of the document.

China Daily noted that then president George W. Bush had also done so but had, over time, come to see China as a "responsible stakeholder", "paving the way for years of stability in Sino-US relations". "Overall, the report was not very forceful, offensive or confrontational (towards China)", said Professor Su.
