Apple Hit With Second Class-Action Lawsuit for Slowing Down Older iPhones

So naturally they went and did what any angry American would do: sue.

Last year, Apple introduced a feature to "smooth out" spikes in demand for power to prevent iPhone 6 models from shutting down due to the cold or weak batteries, according to the California-based company.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

Apple releases new iPhone models annually, and sales of the handsets power its money-making engine.

So the cat is out of the bag now.

The sudden shutdown problem became widespread among iPhones in late 2016, forcing Apple to issue a software fix that had the net result of slowing the phone somewhat with an old, cold or low-charged battery, the company said. This so-called feature, therefore, will engage the brake to slow down older iPhone. So Apple is now controlling how much power older iPhones can draw to prevent those devices from shutting down suddenly. The company blamed the battery, not the iOS 10 bug, and was quick to declare that when your iPhone shuts down automatically, it's actually a feature created to protect the electronic parts - not a bug!

The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries.

To prove Apple was right about the battery being the culprit, some users who have had older batteries replaced said they've seen improved benchmarks after replacing their batteries.

People anxious about performance could replace batteries, which Apple does for free for iPhones covered by warranty or for $79 if that is not the case.

In this week's top stories: Apple confirms that it slows down older iPhones, the iMac Pro starts arriving to customers, drone footage shows Apple Park starting to live up to its name, and more.

Apple design of handsets makes it borderline impossible for people to change batteries themselves. However, the lawsuit says: "Nobody from Apple customer support suggested that he replace his battery to improve the performance of his iPhone".
