David Davis has backtracked on his threat to resign as Brexit Secretary if Damian Green was sacked following claims that pornography had been found on his House of Commons computer.

Mr Green, the former first secretary of state, and one of the Prime Minister's closest allies, had faced a public probe over claims explicit material was found on his computer in 2008.

Mr Green has stepped down from two roles: first secretary of state and cabinet office minister.

"I think what is emerging is someone of the most extraordinary resilience in very challenging circumstances, who is capable of taking very hard decisions about close colleagues like Damian Green - even with all these other things going on", Mr Hunt said.

A report by May's Cabinet secretary concluded Green had made misleading statements regarding his knowledge about the indecent images found by police.

Green lost his job at the top of government after he was found to have made "misleading" statements about allegations that police found pornography on computers in his parliamentary office in 2008.

May said she asked Green for his resignation after the investigation concluded he had not been open about the matter. "I am sure that she didn't want him to go".

In his resignation letter, in which he said he was "asked to resign", Green responded to Maltby's allegation writing, "I do not recognise the events she described in her article, but I clearly made her feel uncomfortable and for this I apologise".

Green is one of May's oldest friends and one of her few close political confidants.

And she warned its conclusions might allow Mr Green to escape investigation by the new body Parliament is setting up following the sexual harassment scandal.

Green was also the subject of controversy last month when Tory activist Kate Maltby accused him of making a sexual advance toward her in 2015.

Green's sacking follows the November resignations of Sir Michael Fallon as defence secretary amid Westminster sleaze allegations, and global development secretary Priti Patel over undisclosed meetings in Israel.
