Rajasthan 26 dead after bus falls off bridge into river

The exact cause of the accident will be ascertained after an inquiry.

First responders recovered at least 32 bodies Saturday after a passenger bus plunged off a bridge and dropped into a river in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

The bus had picked up passengers from the Sawai Madhopur railroad station.

The police immediately rushed to the spot and carried out the rescue work.

The bus was traveling from Hindaun in eastern Rajasthan to a Hindu temple in Sawai Madhopur, according to state media.

The passengers were from Rajasthan, UP, MP and Assam. "The tyre marks are going straight and suddenly swerve right with a curve of about 90 degrees which indicates the driver lost control in seconds", Maman Singh Yadav, superintendent of police, Sawai Madhopur told TOI on Sunday.

The speeding bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it rammed through the bridge railing, said B L Soni, another police officer.

Most of the people died due to drowning including the bus driver, he said. "My thoughts are with the families of the deceased".

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje took to Twitter to express her condolences and support for the victims.
