More Pregnant Mothers in California Are Using Pot

Study Say Maximum Pregnant Women Smoking Pot 27122017

Researchers found that marijuana consumption among pregnant women in the state has risen from 2009 to 2016 from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent.

"Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drugs during pregnancy, and its use is increasing", the study said.

Smoking marijuana was on the rise among pregnant women in California, a study showed.

The research published Tuesday involved only certain women in California, according to CNN.

"Of concern" to the researchers was that fact that marijuana use was particularly common among younger pregnant women.

Officials in Colorado, where recreational pot was legalized, have warned women not to smoke it during pregnancy, Gizmodo reported. The study participants completed questionnaires about their marijuana use and took a cannabis toxicology test during their standard prenatal care visits from 2009 through 2016.

"Because of the possibility of concurrent use of marijuana and other substances of abuse, the evidence of its direct association with preterm labor, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth is still debatable, though these adverse effects lean more towards an increased likelihood of occurrence", Yankey continued.

In many states, medical marijuana can be prescribed for treating conditions including severe nausea and pain - both of which may affect pregnant women - but the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends women stay away from weed if they want to have a baby. The study adds that prenatal use may increase even more in 2018, after recreational use of marijuana is set to become legal in California. However, on a federal level, it is still illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate marijuana.

As it turns out, the research remains unclear as to just how little a pregnant woman could drink without harming her child.

"I have found that women frequently fall into two groups during pregnancy". These women start folic acid, lose weight and reduce medication exposure of any kind before becoming pregnant.
