If you own a device with Blackberry OS or Blackberry 10 then WhatsApp will not be working on your phone this coming year. WhatsApp will stop working on devices running BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older from December 31, 2017. While the app still works on newer Windows Phones, those users still have to reckon with the fact that Microsoft isn't too interested in updating its mobile platform.

Note: Because we will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time. Support for BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 ends on the midnight of December 31 2017, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older on the midnight of December 31 2017. While existing users will still be able to use the service, newcomers will be unable to create new accounts; nor will they be able to verify new accounts.

"When we started WhatsApp in 2009, people's use of mobile devices looked very different from today", WhatsApp said in a blog post on its website.

"While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future", WhatsApp said in its blogpost. "About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia", it reads.

To recall, WhatsApp had extended support for both platforms in June this year.

WhatsApp's advice to those who have one of the affected smartphones but want to continue using the service is simply to buy an upgraded device.

However, support for Nokia S40 will continue until December 31 2018, while Android versions 2.3.7 and older will continue until February 1, 2020, the company announced on the FAQ page.

WhatsApp is quite remarkable in its support for older platforms and devices.

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile app used by more than 1 billion people in over 180 countries to stay in touch with friends and family, anytime and anywhere.
