George Manneh Weah to be Liberia's 25th President

Football legend George Weah wins Liberian presidential election

The announcement made by the National Elections Commission chairman Jerome Karyoka comes after premature calls on social media by some sections of the media and prominent personalities that ex-football star George Weah had won the election.

Almost 2.2 million voters were choosing between the 51-year-old Weah and 73-year-old Vice President Joseph Boakai.

He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.

Ms Sirleaf took office in 2006, after her predecessor President Taylor was forced out by rebels in 2003, ending a long civil war.

But Weah was similarly resolute that his second run for the presidency would be successful.

State radio correspondents reported unofficial results overnight indicating that former worldwide soccer player George Weah led in several counties, but election authorities warned the two parties to "stop making premature pronouncements".

George Weah is considered one of the greatest African footballers of all-time and spent time at AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG and a host of other clubs.

Boakai waged a bitter legal battle over problems with queue control and voter identification in the October 10 first round.

Taylor is serving his 50-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom for war crimes related to the conflict in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

More than two million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the nation of 4.6 million people.

His CDC party contested the results in 2005 and 2011, but has refrained so far this time.

On Tuesday polling stations displayed voter lists as a mark of transparency for the run-off.
