The United Blood Services encourages community to “Pay it Forward,” with holiday blood drive

On Dec. 16, 2017 Canadian Blood Services put out a call for more blood donors over the holiday season, saying 35,000 open appointments needed to be filled across Canada before January 6, 2018.

Canadian Blood Services says the holiday season is a slower time for blood donations.

UBS says during the holiday season, blood donations tend to drop about 40 percent and it's during that time that donations are needed most.

People interested in giving blood should check the Canadian Blood Services website to determine if they are eligible, and can also book an appointment online.

"In Syria, the donation of blood is considered the highest form of loyalty to the community".

"We are pleased so many Canadians have stepped up to fill an open appointments to give blood and are confident others will join them by year-end or early in the New Year, " said Rick Prinzen, Canadian Blood Services' chief supply chain officer.

O-negative blood is in particular demand, since that is "the universal blood type" compatible with everyone.

The New Liskeard Blood Donor Clinic has 120 spots to fill.

The Red Deer clinic is open 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

"The holiday period always presents challenges for us as we work to ensure we have enough blood and blood products to meet patients' needs", Canadian Blood Services stated in a press release.

When the donation of blood is finished, you are asked to rest for five minutes in the chair before heading to the refreshment area where you can relax for 15 minutes with a complimentary cool drink and sweet snack.

New and existing donors are welcome and walk-ins will be accepted, says Canadian Blood Services.
