People gather to protest over high cost of living in Tehran Iran

According to the information provided by the network of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran inside the country, the anti-regime protests in Iranian cities have continued on Friday. Farmers have blamed the hikes on higher prices for imported feed. Protests have even been held in Qom, a holy city home to powerful clerics.

The security deputy of Tehran's governor, Mohsen Hamedani, said that fewer than 50 people gathered at a public square in Tehran, and that majority left after a police warning but a few chose to stay on.

A senior government official has accused the opponents of President Hassan Rouhani's administration of being involved in organizing a recent protest in the city of Mahshad.

"Iran's leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos".

Hundreds of Iranians protested in the northeastern city of Mashhad against the rising cost of food and other essentials, with local authorities saying an unspecified number of people had been arrested.

The security forces charged at the people but the people resisted and confronted them. After the 2009 election, protesters gathered in the streets to challenge what they believed was a fraudulent vote that returned hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a new term.

"Video footage from Thursday's protest in Mashhad showed demonstrators chanting "Death to Rouhani", Leave Syria, think about us" and "Not Gaza, not Lebanon, my life for Iran".

Protests were also reported in the city of Rasht.

The economy has improved since the landmark 2015 nuclear deal lifted sanctions on the country, but the effects have yet to trickle down to ordinary Iranians. Protesters also waved banners denouncing Iran's interference in the Arab region, chanting "forget about Syria, think about us".

Egg prices in Iran had doubled since last week, due to the government's culling of millions of chickens diagnosed with avian flu, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, a Rohani ally, suggested that hard-line opponents of the president may have started the protests in Mashhad.

Out of the 80-million population, some 3.2 million Iranians are jobless, equating to an unemployment rate of 12.4 percent in this fiscal year, according to the Statistical Center of Iran.
