According to the Washington Blade, the remaining 16 members received a letter from FedEx revealing their termination with no explanation.

President Donald Trump has fired the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, according to reports from Newsweek.

This week, HIV reseracher Dr Patrick Sullivan told The Washington Post that a form letter was sent out that "thanked me for my past service and said that my appointment was terminated, effective immediately". "Dangerous that #Trump and Co. (Pence esp.) are eliminating few remaining people willing to push back against harmful policies, like abstinence-only sex ed", he added.

The firings came Wednesday, and numerous members still had time remaining on their terms.

Gabriel Maldonado, chief executive of the LGBT and HIV/AIDS group Truevolution and a council member until this week, said he could only speculate why the final members were fired.

"It is a unsafe thing when the administration is eliminating people whose views are based in science and community experience", HIV Project Director at Lambda Legal in an interview with GPB. "Many of us were Obama appointees".

Cecilia Chung, an Obama-era appointee who left voluntarily after her term expired earlier this year, echoed these concerns.

Maldonado said "ideological and philosophical differences" with the administration are a potential reason for the terminations. The CDC director has denied those words are banned.

Most of Maldonado's work involves addressing the "disproportionate impact of HIV and AIDS to people of color, gay men, transgender women". "And a lot of those key vulnerable populations are not being prioritized in this administration". Its most recent meeting took place in August, Sullivan said, and by November, an archived version of PACHA's website shows the group was down to 10 members and two staff.

He also mentioned different priorities between the current administration and former council members. "The Obama Administration dismissed the George W. Bush Administration appointees to PACHA in order to bring in new voices", she said. "I think where the discrepancy comes in is why a year later, number one?" An estimated 1.2 million people have HIV/AIDS in the United States and 37 million have the disease worldwide. In the 2018 fiscal year budget Trump has sought huge cuts to programs including $150 million on HIV/AIDS at the Centers of Disease Control. The Republican-controlled Congress has thus far continued to fund these programs at previous levels. "There is no way for us to know where on the agenda HIV policy is, and that is the concerning part".

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

It is not yet clear when the new appointments will be made.

However, HIV/AIDS activists have been deeply critical of the White House's approach over the past year.
