Alpha version of Kodi has appeared on Xbox One in limited regions

This is great news for Xbox One users, as the Kodi software is an incredibly flexible and versatile media player, mainly thanks to its large range of third party add-ons that can turn it into a DVR, allow it to stream from various sources and broadcast live TV.

Xbox One has support for some of the Windows 10 applications so you can download media players like VLC or media servers like Kodi.

Last night, we reported that a Kodi Xbox One alpha app had been released and this morning Kodi has released a post detailing some of the features, issues, and caveats.

That said, if you don't mind a few rough edges, you can visit the Xbox Store and give Kodi a whirl. So if you use it on another platform, you will already be familiar with the interface and won't have any trouble. The team further stating that development of a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) version of the software compatible with Xbox One could finally begin in earnest.

That means there are some restrictions on how it can be used on the Xbox One console. Due to the nature of how UWP works our hands are tied in some areas. Kodi can access video and music files in a limited way with network support being limited to NFS:// shares.

Other parts haven't even been finished yet, but the developers are working on getting the app up to what users expect. I'm sure there's more that might not work as intended yet as there are so many features it just will take a while to go over them. We cannot promise to what extend we can get every feature working as it all depends on what is available to us developers. Knowing that the UWP version now only supports NFS, I'm hoping there's an easy way to hook into that from the Drobo for media streaming.

It should be noted that this build isn't final yet and now there are several missing features compared to Kodi on PC, for example.

Kodi announced the news on their website confirming the software can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
