A tweet about the trip from New Zealand to Hawaii generated a spirited discussion online, with close to 300 comments made about the journey.

Reports suggest that a Hawaiian Airlines flight that took-off on January 1, 2018, from Auckland, landed in Honolulu on December 31, 2017.

Several people on Twitter had a lot to say about the odd occurrence.

It then was due to arrive mid-morning on December 31 in Honolulu. While others couldn't help but make plenty of pop culture jokes, from a confused Dr. Phil to Lost to Back to the Future.

That's because the flight crossed the International Date Line on its journey from Auckland to Hawaii.

The passengers are *actual* time travellers though- give their aircraft's speed their watches will run slower relative to those of us not onboard.

But it is not as uncommon as some might believe with planes crossing the International Date Line every day.

One Twitter user wrote: "Even more impressive is NZ8 that I was on last night". But because of the minor delay, the passengers got to ring in the new year one extra time. You would if you flew from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere like 2018's first viral flight of the year.
