GETTY POWERFUL Strong gusts of 70mph are forecast to batter the UK next week

Neil Davies, flood duty manager for the Environment Agency, said: "Stormy conditions will see strong winds and large waves combine with high tides, which could lead to some flooding along western and south-western coasts of England this week, and along the north Kent coastline tomorrow".

"There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life, as well as minor property damage, from flying debris".

The year is about to get off to a windy start, with the latest named storm, Storm Eleanor, due to blast across the United Kingdom tonight, bringing rain, snow, and winds of up to 80mph.

The Met Office weather system is now predicted to bring very strong winds later Tuesday, continuing overnight and on Wednesday.

Coastal roads and properties along Britain's western and southern coasts are vulnerable to high waves throwing beach material on to sea fronts, forecasters warned.

The storm is threatening Ireland and the west of the United Kingdom with winds of up to 90mph, putting lives at risk, the Met Office has said. Indeed, several people took to Twitter to share videos and pictures of flooding in and around the Galway area.

A wind warning is in place for Dublin, Galway, Clare, Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Limerick and Tipperary.

He added: "It could remain more unsettled in the south".

He said: "Torrential rain and gale-force winds are a recipe for driving disaster".
