Protesters accuse Twitter CEO of being 'complicit' after Trump nuclear button tweet

Twitter released a statement on their blog today that, while not mentioning Trump directly, seems to suggest that he would never be banned, no matter what he says or does, due to his status as a world leader.

Trump, who has exchanged a series of threats and insults with the Pyongyang regime since a year ago, tweeted late Tuesday that he, too, has a "nuclear button" that is "much bigger and more powerful" than the one North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has.

Since Trump rode Twitter all the way to the presidency, the social media company has fielded calls to strip Trump of his social-media megaphone. Twitter has previously responded to complaints about Trump's account by saying that certain users' tweets have a "newsworthiness" value that makes it important to stay online and inform the network's global conversation.

Facing growing pressure and a planned protest, Twitter said Wednesday that President Donald Trump did not violate its terms of service when he once again used Twitter to escalate the rhetoric about nuclear arms. "Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation due to their outsized impact on our society", the California-based company said in a blog post. The company's policy has an exemption for military or government entities, but Twitter also said that the Trump tweet did not constitute a "specific threat".

Twitter's rules "prohibit promoting violence against or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of their group characteristics, as well as engaging in abusive behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another person's voice". "We review Tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly", the company explained.

"No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions", Twitter said. "We work hard to remain unbiased with the public interest in mind".

A White House spokeswoman said she did not expect there to be any White House comment on the Twitter statement.

"The View" hosts were discussing the President's tweet to Kim Jong Un earlier this week, when the Commander-in-Chief warned the dictator that he too has a "nuclear button", but unlike Kim's, his "button works".
