Germany has won the Hopman Cup twice, but not since Boris Becker and Anke Huber teamed up in 1995.

The least-experienced player 17 years ago, Federer paired up with then-world No. 1 women's player Martina Hingis.

The 36-year-old was in a spot of bother after dropping the first set in 56 minutes.

The world number four won the first set 7-5, but Kokkinakis rallied back in a big way in the second.

However, Federer used his experience to mount an extraordinary comeback.

Zverev played an inspired tie-break to assume a one-set lead, including a lob that was so special the normally unflappable Swiss fired a ball into the stands in frustration.

His match-winning shot was exemplary, a sublime curler onto the tramline.

"Sascha [Zverev] definitely dropped his level a bit in the second and third sets, but I was able to take advantage of it and most importantly put Team Switzerland ahead. I was always hoping to play for a long time and I'm doing that".

"We were so close past year", she said.

"The court plays fast, so it helps if you approach [the net] and do it the right way". I'm going to the physio now to see what it is.

"For me it's just important to be in a good mindset, well prepared, and ready to go".

"Roger [Federer] was always my idol growing up and now I'm playing against him, so it's very exciting in a deciding match".

Zverev has told Channel 7 he has a message for Roger Federer. It was Kerber's fourth straight singles win at the Hopman Cup this year.

"I am relieved we made it".

"It really is a dream come true". I'll never forget this week.

The German was the one who lost his cool as the match slipped away, copping a code violation for an audible obscenity after disputing the chair umpire's decision to replay a Zverev serve in the second set.

"It makes us young guys look bad".
