The special CBI court in Ranchi pronounced three and half years imprisonment for RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in a fodder scam case on Saturday.

Apart from Lalu Yadav, other convicts Phool Chand, Mahesh Prasad, Bake Julius, Sunil Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Sudhir Kumar and Raja Ram were also sentenced to 3.5 years in jail.

The court had yesterday concluded arguments on the quantum of sentence against Prasad in connection with the withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1990 and 1994 when he was the chief minister of Bihar.

The Bihar Congress on Saturday asserted that Lalu Prasad's conviction in a fodder scam case will not have any impact on the party's ties with the RJD in the state. After being in jail for two months, he got bail from the Supreme Court.

Furthermore, in the wake of court's ruling and pronouncement of sentence against Lalu Prasad Yadav senior members of the RJD are expected to meet today to discuss the party's strategy and the "emerging political situation".

"An open jail is best for these people (convicts), as they also have experience of cow farming", the judge was quoted as saying by the ANI.

On Friday, citing illness and old age, Lalu had sought leniency from the court.

Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).

The RJD supremo is lodged in the Hotwar Central Jail in Ranchi since December 23.

At the emergency meeting of the party today, Tejashwi Yadav said the people were with Lalu Yadav. The court had found his predecessor and former CM of Bihar Jagannath Mishra not guilty and acquitted him of all charges.
