Jammu and Kashmir: Four held for playing Pak anthem during cricket match

Police in India-held Kashmir on Sunday arrested four cricketers for playing the Pakistani national anthem before the start of a cricket match in Bandipora district, Times of India reported.

The Kashmiri cricketers, who were seen singing the Pakistan national anthem, were taken to the Ganderbal Police Station, in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Reportedly the police is looking for the organisers and other players involved in the incident".

The 1.45-minute video showed one team in green jerseys like the Pakistani cricket team.

The video, apparently shot on a cell phone, went viral a week ago. The incident took place on January 3. Apart from arresting four localities, the police have also registered a case against the two teams for participating in unlawful activities.

Sources said the match was played a few days ago at Arin in Bandipore. However, the detained were soon let off following assurances from their parents.

Over the last two years, there have been several instances when the Pakistan national anthem was played during cricket matches in the Valley.

The match was being played between the teams of Gondipora and Dardpora Cricket Club.

This is not the first time that cricket matches have led to arrests in Kashmir. According to media reports, after watching a video being viral on social media, the police filed a case against the players and arrested four out of them.
