Coli O157:H7 HUS Outbreak Associated with Leafy Greens; Romaine?

Consumer Reports, however, is still saying to avoid romaine lettuce.

Maryland and New Jersey now join California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, which all previously reported cases of illness.

General Manager Dale Huss looks over a field of romaine lettuce with drip lines installed in it at Sea Mist Farms in Castroville Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Two people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. The strain of E. coli involved in this outbreak, O157:H7, is particularly serious.

The CDC, for its part, says that it hasn't yet identified the type of leafy green involved and that it's investigation is continuing.

But today, the Centers for Disease Control says that a Consumer Reports story last week advising people to avoid romaine lettuce was too quick to pinpoint that particular ingredient as the culprit.

CDC and FDA will continue to update the public as more information on the outbreak source is uncovered. Neither the CDC nor Canadian health officials have provided any information on where the romaine lettuce potentially involved in the illnesses was grown or processed, so for now, consumers should assume that any romaine lettuce, even when sold in bags and packages, could possibly be contaminated, Rogers said. There has been one death, which was previously reported. CDC continues to work with regulatory partners in several states, at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to identify the source. Canada identified romaine lettuce as the source of illnesses there, but the source of the romaine lettuce or where it became contaminated is unknown. Because of these reporting delays, more time is needed before CDC can say the outbreak in the United Stated is over.

In a January 8 letter to CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald, DeLauro didn't mince words: "CDC's stunning lack of guidance to consumers regarding this outbreak is unconscionable". Holidays can increase this delay. Illnesses usually begin three to four days after eating food contaminated with this bacteria. If you are concerned that you have an E. coli infection, talk to your healthcare provider. "The bacteria can also be transmitted if a person who is carrying the bacteria doesn't wash his or her hands after using the bathroom and then processes or prepares food". But infection with the O157 strain, which produces a shiga toxin, can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
