The all-star skills competition is the night before the game.

Green, in his third season with the Red Wings, leads Detroit defensemen with 24 points (four goals, 20 assists) and all players in average ice time (22:39) in 41 games.

Winger Nikita Kucherov, defenseman Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy will join Lightning captain Steven Stamkos at NHL All-Star Weekend in Tampa, Florida.

On Wednesday, former Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green was named to the 2018 NHL All-Star Game.

The All-Star Game uses a 3-on-3 format, with teams from each of the six divisions. The center now ranks 3rd in the league with 52 points and is a career-high +19 just past the midway point of the season. He also has team-highs in game-winning goals (four), overtime goals (two), power-play points (17) and shots (136). Green was also named an NHL First-Team All-Star in 2009 and 2010 after leading the league's defensemen in points in back-to-back seasons. It marks Hanifin's first appearance in the event. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year in 2013-14, the youngest player to ever win the award (18 years, 224 days).

The league on Wednesday announced rosters for the January 28 event at Amalie Arena in Tampa (3:30 p.m., NBC). The goalie leads the league in shutouts (6) and wins (27).
