South Africa's rand slips as investors book profits

South Africa's rand weakened as much as 1.7 per cent on Wednesday to its worst performance in almost three weeks after the ruling African National Congress said an early exit for President Jacob Zuma had not been discussed at a party meeting.

The DA will continue to pursue every possible avenue to hold Zuma accountable for the 783 counts of corruption against him as well as his role in state capture.

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule speaking ahead of the ANC NEC meeting.

The ANC's top decision makers also meet this week, and Zuma's recall is expected to be on the agenda.

The traditional 8 January statement - which this year marked the ANC's 106th anniversary - will be delivered in East London on Saturday.

The party's special national executive committee decided that it would only focus on speech deferring all other matters to its scheduled ordinary meeting next week.

President Uhuru will be making his first state visit to the country since his second term inauguration.

However, Magashule denied that there was any debate around two centres of power, adding that the party had resolved that the ANC was the only centre of power. He urged the party's rank and file to support the new ANC leadership‚ fight corruption in its ranks and "to not soil the reputation" of the ANC. Despite hype in the media beforehand, Zuma's future appears not.

The president said that "this matter can not wait any longer".

"This is the time for renewal for the ANC", said Sidney Nkadimeng, 43, a rank-and-file ANC member from Pretoria who is in East London for the party's birthday celebrations, which culminate on Saturday.
