Men Spinoff Gambit Loses Director Gore Verbinski

Deadpool, New Mutants and Gambit all get new release dates; Gore Verbinski exits as director for Gambit

Besides, Gambit now faces the tricky conundrum of attracting a fourth director now that Verbinski has left the building. Last November, Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Cloverfield) was hired as the female lead opposite Tatum, and the movie was given a release date of February 2019.

Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski has exited the Channing Tatum X-Men spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. It's a bad sign for "Gambit", which has sputtered in development limbo for quite some time, despite a strong commitment from Fox and still-attached titular star Channing Tatum.

Also unclear is whether the move marks a change in direction for the film, perhaps prompted by Disney's impending acquisition of Fox. But it's unfortunate that this movie can't seem to find the right assembly of talent to bring it to the starting blocks (let alone the finish line), because Fox's X-Men spin-offs have established themselves as being far more creatively interesting than the traditional team-up X-Men movies lately (see: Deadpool, Logan, New Mutants). "We had a first draft". While there will be the inevitable success with the new Deadpool movie and the next X-Men sequel coming later this year, not everything else appears to be coming together as smoothly. Of course, Verbinski is just the latest director to leave the project stranded, following Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman in 2015 and 2016, respectively, so this doesn't necessarily reflect that poorly on him. Tatum, a MS native whose father is from Metairie, boarded the project in May of that year.

In the comics, Remy LeBeau, a.k.a. Gambit, is a mutant with the ability to manipulate objects using kinetic energy. Of that, $112 million was earmarked for in-state spending, including $28.1 million for Louisiana payroll.
