CAS fully upholds 28 appeals filed by disqualified Russian athletes

The Winter Olympics in South Korea has produced a rare but fragile rapprochement with the North

The Winter Olympics in South Korea has produced a rare but fragile rapprochement with the North

Earlier Thursday, the Lausanne-based court lifted life bans on 28 of the 43 Russians accused of doping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

He said it was unclear whether the 28 who had their appeals upheld would now compete in South Korea.

In a decision that could allow some of them to compete in the Winter Olympics, the top sports court ruled there was "insufficient" evidence that the athletes had benefited from a system of state-sponsored doping atin Sochi.

Eleven other athletes were confirmed to have committed doping offences although CAS said it had reduced their lifetime Olympic bans to a suspension from this year's Games.

Russia remains banned from entering a team in Pyeongchang by the International Olympic Committee, but the IOC has cleared almost 170 Russian nationals to compete as neutrals.

The panels' decision also impacts another group of athletes: Those who were expecting to expecting to belatedly receive medals as a result of the Russian doping violations.

He would have been the only skeleton coach for the Russians, who will compete as "Olympic Athletes from Russia" under the Olympic flag in Pyeongchang as part of the IOC's sanctions for doping.

"Not being sanctioned does not automatically confer the privilege of an invitation", the organization stressed.

"This information about the CAS decision regarding our athletes confirms that active efforts to protect their rights in courts and in other ways are justified, they can be effective and they must continue", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on a conference call with journalists.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied any state involvement in state-sponsored doping.

"It is a hard question", the Kremlin spokesman added, noting Russian officials would continue talking to the International Olympic Committee.

Those whose results have been reinstated at the Sochi 2014 Olympics include skeleton gold medalist Alexander Tretiakov and cross-country ski gold medalist Alexander Legkov.

Nikitina - who wore her Russian national team jacket to a training session just outside of Moscow on Thursday after the CAS decision came out - is now in position to keep her bronze medal, although the International Olympic Committee said it may take the highly unusual step of appealing CAS' decision to the Swiss supreme court.

Walden told AFP the ruling was "unfortunate" and suggested it "provides a very small measure of punishment for some athletes but a complete "get out of jail free card" for most".

"We never had any doubts that our athletes absolutely deserved their medals they won at Sochi". They would compete as "Olympic Athletes from Russia" - with no use of the Russian flag or national anthem permitted.

A lawyer has said that they will be seeking to do so but Sky News understands that they can only participate in PyeongChang 2018 if they are invited by the International Olympic Committee - which they are unlikely to be.
