The win sees Fiji move up to third in the World Rugby Sevens Series rankings with South Africa extending its lead over second placed New Zealand to eight points despite the loss in the final as New Zealand finished fourth.

Fiji battled through a tough quarterfinal against Samoa‚ winning 12-10 before seeing off NZ 14-12 in their semi-final.

Next up was semifinal opponents Australia who scored an emphatic win over the Blitzboks in last week's Sydney final.

Elsewhere, Australia edged past New Zealand 8-7 to take the third-place honors, while U.S. saw off Argentina 31-12 to lift the Challenge trophy.

Kyle Brown's men were unbeaten in three matches on the opening day and on Sunday whipped Scotland 22-0 in the quarter-final and cruised past Sydney champions Australia 24-5 in the semi-final.

It's the 2016 Olympic gold-medallists' first World Sevens Series event triumph of the season, and their first win on Kiwi soil since 2010.

"We pushed New Zealand to the wire in the quarter-final and then losing out to Samoa in extra time highlights we just got on the wrong side of some close score lines again".

"We had to believe in that and we got momentum in the tackle and in the contact areas".

McConnochie got England's day off and running as he crossed for the first of two tries against Russian Federation inside the first minute in a 47-0 win, with 19-year-old Ryan Olowofela also scoring twice in that match - his first every tries at the World Series.

Four minutes later, Naduva, the man in the only green boots in the final, ran around the Blitzboke defence to level scores 5-all.
