Natalie Wood's daughter says stepdad Robert Wagner didn't kill her mum after cops reveal he's a 'person of interest' in

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told ABC News last week in a statement, "Wagner has always been a person of interest". "I tried to talk to him a year ago and he looked me in the eye and said that he's cooperated with the police and he spoke with them".

At the press conference, Corina and the Los Angeles County's Sheriff's Department reviewed the new eyewitnesses' accounts that were presented last week.

Wagner has admitted to having argued with Walken, but said Wood had gone to bed early, and it was during that time period that she slipped and fell off the boat.

Time has been the largest obstacle in the probe and the original investigator and numerous witnesses have died, Corina said.

During a news conference at sheriff's headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, Sheriff's Lt. John Corina said that the department was giving the case one "last shot" to see if any other witnesses would come forward.

And now lately the number of witnesses coming forward has been reduced to a trickle, Corina said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department gave a press conference Monday to discuss the latest developments in the Natalie Wood death investigation.

So investigators returned to a tried-and-true strategy: Goose up the publicity with the help of the media and wait for new tips to come rolling in, despite the length of time that has elapsed.

Last week, investigators told CBS News that Wagner is a person of interest, saying that they want to speak with the actor about the circumstances surrounding Wood's death.

"We can't make him". "When all the tips dry up, we'll move on to the next case". "We're closer to understanding what happened".

Robert Wagner in December 2013 in Beverly Hills. "I can swim a little bit, but I'm afraid of water that is dark". You bet. His version of events doesn't add up to what we've found.

Wood, who starred in "West Side Story" and was nominated for three Academy Awards, was found dead in the waters off Southern California's Catalina Island. Wagner, now 87, was mostly known as a TV star and is still a working actor (NCIS).

Wood's body was found floating in a Santa Catalina Island cove on the morning of November 29, 1981, after a night of dining and drinking on the island and on a yacht with her husband Wagner, fellow actor Christopher Walken, and the boat's captain. He said the key to deciding if it becomes a murder investigation is finding out how Wood got in the water - did she fall accidentally or was she put in the water. "I'd like to thank the witnesses that came forward and reached out to the general public who have firsthand knowledge of that night", Bergner offered. Shortly after that, separate witnesses who were on a boat that was in the water nearby, heard a man and woman arguing on the back of the boat and believe the voices were those of Wood and Wagner, Corina said.

Reuters was referred by Wagner's publicist to his lawyer, who did not reply to requests for comment.

Investigators told CBS that they haven't yet been able to prove that Wood's death was a homicide, nor can they prove it was an accident.
