The two firefighters were treated for hypothermia. Healy said there are parts of the ice in the pond that are very thick - but not where the boy fell through.

The 12-year-old, after coming out of the water, immediately went to his home to seek help.

After being trapped in the water for about a half-hour, Anthony was pulled out by first responders and transported to a hospital, where he died, authorities told the New York Daily News.

Anthony Perez, 11, is credited with saving his friend who broke through the ice on a frozen pond in New York City, but then died in the frigid water before police and firefighters could find him. First responders were called to Queens' Forest Park around 4:05 p.m. where they found the child unconscious in the water.

Healy said, "They were in about chest deep water wading through the water".

Carmen River, who lives next door to the family, said the boy was friendly and always wanting to help.

George Healy, a deputy chief with the New York Fire Department, said the pond's conditions were unsafe even for the firefighters who rescued the boy.

The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The news quickly reached Perez's neighbourhood, devastating his friends, family and neighbours.

Following the incident, neighbors remembered Anthony as the young boy with the "big smile". "It's a shame that something bad has to happen to this kid", added Coraci.

The pond sits at the bottom of a hill, surrounded by trees, with a winding a path leading to it.

A sign by the pond warns of thin ice.

Park Department officials said although the city parks are open all over the year, people are restricted from going near the water bodies.

"There are a lot of lakes around the city of NY. Especially to children, they might be enticing at this time of year". "It won't support your weight".

"The ice is not safe".
