Apple's iPad continues to be the world's best-selling tablet

Regardless of the numbers for individual manufacturers, worldwide shipping figures have decreased from 2016, falling from 174.9 million units shipped to 163.5 million units shipped in 2017.

"To date, much of the trajectory of the detachable market has been attributed to Microsoft and Apple pushing their wares in the US", said Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers.

While last-year IDC blamed "cheap" slabs for the ongoing tablet sales slump, the analyst outfit said this week that tablets have been "largely relegated to simple media consumption devices" as they don't offer much in the way of productivity. Samsung's market share dropped from 14.9% in Q4 2016 to 14.1% in Q4 2017. While the low-priced tablets did pretty well for Amazon's online storefront, the company's expansion into other markets across the world as well as the inclusion of Alexa voice assistant in the latest tablets also paid off.

The now "old-fashioned" slate tablets continued their decline with end-user demand dropping 7.6 percent from the previous year, an ongoing pattern in the last few year. Meanwhile, Amazon climbed into second place with 7.7 million Kindle Fire tablets shipped, for 15.6% of the market.

Indeed, in the final quarter of 2017 - the holiday period - detachables grew 10 percent to reach 6.5 million shipments. It's been going down while detachable ones saw some increase. This represented a 28% sequential increase due to the holidays. iPad Pro has been priced low enough that Apple is taking share from higher-priced Windows 2-in-1s among consumers and boosting total iPad ASPs higher year-on-year to $445.

Unlike Samsung whose business model is to sell devices at a profit, Amazon sells tablets at cost price or less as a gateway to Amazon's services.

Tablets have officially entered their fourth consecutive year of decline, according to a new study conducted by International Data Corporation. Huawei (3.5 million units shipped) was fourth with 7.1% of the tablet market during the quarter, and Lenovo (3.1 million units shipped) took fifth place with 6.2% of the market.
