At least 19 killed as bus topples over

The accident occurred on a busy highway in the New Territories, to the north of Hong Kong's. Reuters reports firefighters had to cut open the bus' roof to free the passengers inside.

According to injured passengers, the bus was allegedly going faster than allowed after they had complained that the bus was 10 minutes behind schedule, local media reported.

The driver has been arrested on two counts of causing death and grievous bodily harm by unsafe driving.

The injured passenger told the paper: "It was much faster than I normally felt in a bus".

The dead included 15 males and three females, police said.

Many early reports of the incident claimed only 18 people were killed in the crash; later accounts increased the number to 19.

He also called on the government to immediately follow up on, and regulate the working time limit for bus drivers - for example, by requiring regular health checkups to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.

An executive surnamed So, with The Kowloon Motor Bus Co that operated the bus, said $HK80,000 ($US10,230) in financial assistance would be paid to the families of each victim.

The driver had been with the company since 2014 and was familiar with the route on which the accident happened.

She said the commission will be headed by a judge and she expected it to come up with suggestions to ensure Hong Kong's public transport system is reliable and safe.

According to the representative, the driver showed no signs of fatigue.

Another 47 people were injured and taken to hospitals, including 19 in serious condition, the Hospital Authority said.

In September past year, three people were killed when a double-decker bus mounted a pavement in Sham Shui Po.
