President Donald Trump on Saturday seemed to frame the downfall of a pivotal aide accused of abusing his wives as a character assassination, adding to the tumult that has engulfed the White House, splintered the staff and imperiled chief of staff John Kelly's hold on his position. "Some are true and some are false".

In a bid to quash media speculation about Kelly's possible resignation, White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Kelly had not been terminated, and is still chief of staff, CBS News reported on Friday.

"There is no recovery for someone falsely accused", Mr Trump tweeted. He defended him and attacked the women who made the allegations, He said they were complaining and saying awful things about someone who had helped them.

On Friday, a second White House staffer, speechwriter David Sorensen, resigned as a result of abuse allegations.

Short acknowledged Sunday that the Porter matter exposed "some lack of communication" within the White House, but he said the well-regarded aide was "out" shortly after officials became aware of the extent of the abuse allegations.

The Washington Post first reported Sorensen's resignation Friday evening, and reported that his ex-wife, Jessica Corbett, alleged that "he ran a auto over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine's coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life". Sorensen denied the allegations, saying he has "never committed violence of any kind against any woman in my entire life", and alleging that he "was the victim of repeated physical violence" during his marriage. "And a week ago, I had no reason to believe that that had ever happened". "I don't walk around the White House wondering, 'Who is this person really?' And we work in very close quarters together, and we're trying, as just small pieces of this, to do good for the country". "3 American women are murdered every day by their husband or boyfriend". Former New Jersey Republican Gov. Christine Todd Whitman tweeted: "The fact that @realDonaldTrump praised Porter and said not a word about his abusive behavior or his former wives is typical of the WH attitude toward women and abuse".

Despite his call for "due process", Trump has a history of issuing condemnations and promulgating conspiracies based on "a mere allegation".

"I found out about it recently and I was surprised by it", Trump said. And it harks back to an episode last summer in which White House staff leaked word that Trump had personally involved himself in the misleading explanations of Donald Trump Jr.'s Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer.

"I'm building a wall. Mexico's fine", Trump said. I think he's very disturbed by it.

"He has full confidence in his current chief of staff, General John Kelly", she said.

The chant stems from questions surrounding Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.

Publicly, he has come to Trump's aid at moments of crisis, while privately he has been used to kill damaging news stories, or put a positive spin on them.

And then we got this. A convicted murderer/rapist confessed.
