New Jersey man sentenced to life in prison for planting bombs including one that injured more than 30 people

M - A New Jersey man allegedly inspired by ISIS and al Qaeda to plant bombs in New York City and New Jersey was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday - after complaining that he was being discriminated against for being Muslim, NBC News reported.

"I'm an immigrant like you", she told him.

Prosecutors had used a Rahimi diary as evidence that he wanted to be a part of jihad, but in court Tuesday Rahimi didn't take responsibility for the bombing.

Hours earlier a pipe bomb, also planted by Rahimi, exploded in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

Rahimi, prosecutors said, gave inmates copies of terrorist propaganda and jihadist materials, including speeches and lectures by al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki, a US -born cleric who inspired attacks on America and was killed in a USA airstrike in September 2011.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, center, is led into court in Elizabeth, N.J. on December 20.

After a two-week trial in October, a jury found Rahimi guilty on eight counts, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction. He said consecutive life sentences would not "show the world justice".

He said he considered Rahimi to be a danger to the community, citing the "hostile and threatening " nature of the bombings and the influence of "virulent anti-U.S." terrorist propaganda.

Rahimi's attorney, Xavier Donaldson, said they plan to appeal.

"Since his arrest, Mr. Rahimi has completed classes in business, entrepreneurship and drama while in BOP (Federal Bureau of Prisons) custody", the letter said.

In court, Rahimi echoed his father's remarks, seeming to blame the Federal Bureau of Investigation for not stopping him sooner. The bomb left along the Seaside Park boardwalk was a pipe bomb stuffed in a trash can; the NY bombs were "pressure cooker" style devices. A Bangladeshi driver detonated a bomb in a subway passageway, wounding himself and three other people in December.

"Rahimi attempted to wreak havoc in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City".

Rahimi's arrest came two days after the September 17 bombings during a shootout with police. Police officers also were injured.

Rahimi, a naturalized US citizen who was born in Afghanistan, was arrested after a gunfight with New Jersey police, who found he was carrying a journal with praise for Islamic terrorists and promises of violence.
