Canada won its first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Olympics in the team figure skating competition. The Russians could pick up a maximum of four points in that discipline.

Four years ago, when I was left off the team, I wanted to make another Olympic team, and I knew I would really have to be something special.

"At the end of the day, a medal's a medal and I'm going to hold this medal tight to me and it's going to be as good as the individual event", Chan told him. You have to be pretty fortunate to do multiple games and have a shot at medals. It's not that he didn't feel it this time around-"let me tell you, it was nerve-wracking", Chan said, of that free skate-but he proved he can thrive under that pressure at the Olympics. The charge for the podium by the United States was led by Mirai Nagasu who landed a very hard triple axel becoming the first American woman to land the move.

Nagasu's rousing skate solidified her team's claim for a medal - and she even included a yell out on the ice, something her teammates echoed as they looked on. Canadian Gabrielle Daleman scored 137.14 points. The 15 year old trains alongside Yevgenia Medvedeva, and a showdown is expected between the two for the Olympic gold in the ladies event.

Rippon executed a clean free skate to finish third in the five-man field. His artistry boosted his mark significantly, and, frankly, the four other competitors are not his main competition in the individual event later this week.

"We wanted to make sure one of us would beat the Russians in our events, and I'm so honored to have done it", Chan said.

Sochi silver medallist Patrick Chan earned his first-ever Olympic gold medal by helping Canada to secure the lead in the team standing with a season best 179.75 points in men's free skating.

Adam Rippon, replacing US champ Nathan Chen, skated a fluid and at times mesmerizing routine, but his marks were damaged by inconsistencies with his jumps, including omitting a planned quad lutz.

Team USA had 62 points in third place, followed by Italy with 56 points in fourth place and Japan with 50 points in fifth place. Consider this your regular reminder that no country is as dominant in any winter sport as the Dutch are at speedskating; the Netherlands' 105 Olympic medals in the sport are almost 40 more than the second-place United States. "I still have another week of competition to go, but to have that moment, my family is here, I have friends watching at home".

To the disappointment of many fans, especially longtime Canadian followers who have watched them for years, Virtue and Moir maintain that their relationship is strictly platonic - and has always been, except for that childhood blip.

Invermere's Manuel Osborne-Paradis, Invermere's Ben Thomsen and Whistler's Benjamin Broderick Thompson are back on the ski hill to compete for a gold medal in the slalom portion of the event.
