Love blooms and roses rule for Midstate florists at Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day can be the busiest day of the year for florists

Valentine's Day can be the busiest day of the year for florists

"Busy, busy, busy", said James Ballow, a Nacogdoches florist.

Now just a day away, cupid's favorite holiday is certainly her busiest of the year - with Mother's Day a more relaxing second.

"We call it a big hit on the head", said Garner.

Pam Krauss, who owns Floral Villa in Whitewater, thinks she's narrowed it down to which demographic is buying the most for the holiday.

Because there will be a lot of walk-in customers, she tries to have plenty of arrangements on hand. Neel suggests trying out lisianthus which is also known as eustoma, saying, "The flowers look exactly like roses but are more fragile".

"Tim's great, I've known him for so long, we can ask each other anything", said Krauss. "I've been doing this for so long myself, that I feel like I could make them with my eyes shut". But no one wants them a day early or late.

The flowers arrive fresh, meaning a rush in the days before the holiday as regular and seasonal workers process roses, prepare floral arrangements and assemble gift baskets. If she absolutely loves tulips, get the tulips.

"They're classic, you know", Viviano said.

"If you feel like a dozen roses is expensive, you can get one rose that's sure makes somebody smile just to get one rose, you don't need to go insane".

Have you ever wondered why roses are so popular during Valentine's Day or even why the tradition exists?

As the holiday gets closer, it will be more hard to track down deals, but most sites are offering discounts for certain types of flowers and bouquets.

At Toni's, with about a dozen full-time employees including three on deliveries, Valentine's Day is a well-rehearsed ballet of flowers.

The folks over at Serendipity realize that some people have to buy their flowers last minute.

He had only been working at the shop for the past few days as seasonal help due to the increased volume of flower orders for Valentine's Day.

It's Valentine's Day on Wednesday, and that means a boost for some segments of the economy - any retailer that's selling cards for instance.

Bill Waszkiewicz, owner of Chester's Flower Shop and Greenhouses, said the cost of flowers at his shop hasn't changed.

Brown said her first year was "excellent, and insane".

The language of flowers, also known as floriography, gained interest in Victorian England as a way to send messages and express feelings that could not be spoken aloud in Victorian society.

One of many stories relating to the origin of Valentine's Day comes from ancient Rome, where a young priest named Valentine was furious with the outlawing of marriage for young couples and performed them in secret.
