S. African President Zuma faces recall

Ruling African National Congress (ANC) has given President Jacob Zuma 48 hours to resign from office, warning that if he fails to comply he would be forced out, according to state broadcaster SABC Tuesday.

"The national executive committee made a decision to recall the president in accordance with rule 12.2 of the ANC, which allows the ANC to recall it's deployees", Magashule told reporters at the ruling party's headquarters, Luthuli House.

In his first public remarks since leaders of the African National Congress demanded he step down, Zuma defiantly refused to go and complained the party was trying to rush him out. He faces more than 780 allegations relating to a 1990s arms deal alone, and faces criticism for his links to a family of powerful businessmen, the Guptas.

Zuma's presidency has been overshadowed by allegations of corruption which he has always vehemently denied.

But Mr Zuma showed no sign of going quietly when he appeared on television and said the ANC had not followed the proper procedure to unseat him.

Zuma's spokesman could not be reached for comment.

"I need to be furnished on what I've done", Mr Zuma said.

Magashule said the party did not give Zuma a deadline to tender his resignation, but said they expected a quick turnaround.

During a 13-hour marathon in Pretoria on Monday, the ANC's executive committee tried to end a prolonged standoff with Zuma, who has proposed to resign within three to six months.

But with the 2019 general elections looming, the ANC has turned against Zuma and has said that the tumult over the President's scandals was tarnishing the party's name and bringing instability to the country.

South Africa's elite police unit today arrested three people as they raided the posh home of India-born Guptas, a controversial business family linked to embattled President Jacob Zuma, who is under pressure to quit. The Economic Freedom Fighters, the third biggest party, last month proposed the no-confidence motion that's now due to be debated on 22 February, and plans to go to court if it isn't brought forward.

It is unclear how Zuma would respond to the formal request to step down, which was expected to be issued later on Tuesday.

Zuma often claims the ANC will "rule until Jesus comes back," but South Africans are showing appetite for something else.

Despite the damning decision to order Zuma's "recall" - party speak for "removal from office" - domestic media said the 75-year-old might yet defy the party's wishes.

"I have got mixed feelings", said Johan Van Vuren, 32, a photographer in Johannesburg.
