According to the study in the Journal BMJ Open, those who eat slow give their bodies time to register that it's eaten something. Only 21.5 percent of participants in a self-defined slow eating group were obese, compared with more than 44 percent of a self-defined fast-eating group, Channel News Asia explained.

In accordance with the Japanese Society for the Study of Obesity, a BMI of 25 was considered as obese for the research study conducted for the Japanese populations. "Interventions aimed at reducing eating speed may be effective in preventing obesity and lowering health risks".

They interviewed nearly 60,000 type 2 diabetes patients about their eating habits and then analyzed the data.

The researchers observed the data from 60,000 people who have diabetes over a six-year period.

A new study suggests that eating slowly can lower the risk of becoming obese, while keeping your Body Mass Index (BMI) in a healthy range. Average BMI and waist circumference were both higher among those eating more quickly.

The Standard Health Check-up and Counselling Guidance Programme was used as a questionnaire to determine participants' eating speed and lifestyle habits.

The data of the claims comprised information on the dates of consultations and therapies, and the check-ups incorporated the measurements of BMI and waist circumference, and results of blood tests, urine tests and tests for liver function.

At the start of the study, some 22,070 people routinely wolfed down their food; 33,455 ate at a normal speed and 4,192 lingered over every mouthful. These participants were grouped into these three groups depending on their own analysis of their eating speed. Around half of the total sample (just under 52 per cent) changed their eating speed over the course of the six years.

'In contrast, eating slowly may help to increase feelings of satiety before an excessive amount of food is ingested'.

The research team also found that people who brought minor tweaks to their lifestyles like saying no to post-dinner snacks, eating slowly, and leaving a few-hour window between dinner and bedtime reduced their BMI. Skipping breakfast, on the other hand, did not seem to have any effect on BMI and weight.

What's more it relied on the participants revealing the pace they ate, rather than actually scientifically measuring the speed.

Authors of the study added that people changed the speed of their eating through the research that suggests that if you modify the way you eat you can lose weight. Next time you consider a weight loss program make sure your brain doesn't hold you back. In the case of the fast eater, the signal may only arrive in the brain after the person has already consumed too much food.

The study associated skipping breakfast with obesity and excess weight, also confirming previous studies on the importance of breakfast for people who want to lose weight.
