Kuwait on Monday opened a week of conferences seeking aid for rebuilding Iraq after the onslaught of the Islamic State group, seeking tens of billions of dollars for a nation only a generation ago that invaded it.

The US$88.2 billion estimate was based on an assessment study by Iraqi and global experts, the planning minister said.

Qusay Adulfattah, director-general of Iraq's planning ministry, said Iraq would need $23 billion in the short term to help with rebuilding.

The participants of Kuwait International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq (KICRI) stressed the importance of the human dimension in supporting the reconstruction of Iraq.

The meeting, which brings together several economic powers, as well as regional and global organisations, will discuss the required contributions to rebuilding Iraq after many years of war and conflict, reports Xinhua news agency.

Iraq declared victory over ISIL in December, having taken back all the territory captured by the militants in 2014 and 2015.

In a Monday statement, Qassemi underlined the significance of Iraq as a friend and neighbor of Iran, and said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will take part in Kuwait conference.

The housing sector has the most urgent need for funds, said Raja Rehan Arshad, the lead disaster risk management specialist for the World Bank.

A number of donor sides, regional and global organizations are attending the conference.

The third day will be allocated for a meeting of the foreign ministers and will be concluded by a final communique about the new financial allocations to be channeled to Iraq. We will always be there.

However, officials acknowledge a feeling of fatigue from global donors, especially after the wars in Iraq and Syria sparked the biggest mass migration since World War II.
