Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer took a nasty fall during a quarterfinal race in snowboard cross at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Schairer fractured the fifth cervical vertebrae, and the impact caused his head to whip back and his goggles to fly off.

The result of the crash was a broken neck, but there will not be serious permanent damage, according to doctors that evaluated the injury.

"The good news: Neurological impairments are not present, consequential damage can now be ruled out".

Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer just broke his neck from a horrific crash during an Olympic event, and a slow-mo video caught the devastating moment. Thankfully, Schairer did not suffer any neurological damage.

The 30-year-old three-time Olympian lost control on the next-to-last jump of the run, soaring into the air with his arms flailing before crashing down and landing on his back.

Schairer's been transported back to Austria for further medical treatment, and per ESPN.com, is now in stable condition.

Schairer was in fourth place before his fall, The Washington Post reported, and had hurt his elbow in a crash during an earlier run.

The 30-year-old appeared in Vancouver and Sochi's Games as well. Commentators described the accident as one of the worst they've ever seen in the competition. In 2013, he broke a joint and tore ligaments in his shoulder.
