Barry Bennell convicted on seven more charges

Along with Crewe Alexandra, Manchester City is one of the clubs most seriously implicated, after it emerged that it was told by one of its coaches in the late 1970s that it was "general knowledge" Bennell was a risk to children.

A cheer of "yes" came from the public gallery where six complainants sat with family members as the final verdicts were read out and some people were in tears.

However Bennell may have more than 100 victims in total as he could face further prosecution after an additional 86 complainants have come forward to say they too were abused by him.

Bennell, 64, was convicted this week of 43 sex offences against 11 boys as young as eight.

Former football coach Barry Bennell.

Judge, Recorder of Liverpool Clement Goldstone QC adjourned sentencing until Monday so that cancer-sufferer Bennell - who appeared by videolink - can appear in person.

Shaking with emotion, the victims of Barry Bennell told of their decades of trauma inflicted by the paedophile football coach who destroyed their lives.

But he was also a "child molester on an industrial scale".

He said: "If we use our phones we can't take pictures of the children and put it on the Stoke City Twitter or Facebook page".

Former Crewe player Steve Walters, 46, said his parents trusted the club and thought he was safe, but for years, boys were systematically groomed "in plain view".

City said it has investigated whether the club facilitated sexual abuse of children, and it identified serious allegations against two people: One of them was Bennell, the other was deceased. "All victims were entitled to expect full protection from the kind of harm they endured".

One of Bennell's victims suggested during the court case that Speed, who died in 2011, was among four men to have taken their own lives after being abused by the coach.

Crewe, which employed Bennell for two periods between January 1985 and January 1992, also expressed sympathy but said it was "not aware of any sexual abuse by Mr. Bennell, nor did it receive any complaint about sexual abuse by him, either before or during his employment with the club".

It's particularly problematic when applied to sexual abuse of the sort suffered by Barry Bennell's young footballers, many of whom were interviewed by Deborah Davies - who had first covered Bennell's crimes 20 years ago - in a shattering Channel 4 Dispatches: Football's Wall of Silence. The inquiry is due to report its findings in the coming months.
