Herbal drug kratom linked to salmonella illnesses CDC says

Kratom, a controversial herbal supplement used for pain relief, is likely behind a salmonella outbreak that has affected 20 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a plant in the coffee family that's native to Southeast Asia.

It's still unclear what is at the root of the outbreak, since only eight out of 11 people interviewed said they had taken the supplement, but the warning is not unusual for the CDC.

On February 6, the FDA classified kratom, a botanical substance widely used as a painkiller, despite agency approval, as an opioid.

The latest? Yesterday, February 20, the CDC announced that "as of February 16, 2018, 28 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella.have been reported from 20 states".

Germs invade supplements, Kratom in Salmonella as health representatives have warned Americans not to consume Kratom.

Initial findings from the investigation, however, indicated that kratom is the source of the salmonella outbreak. The substance is often consumed in the form of powdered raw leaves, though sometimes it is made into a tea or other drink.

As it has made its way to the U.S., kratom has gained a reputation as an opioid alternative to help people wean themselves off of the unsafe and addictive drugs with milder withdrawal symptoms, but there have not been clinical studies to prove this.

The herbal drug kratom is under fire for the second time this month. The outbreak, which began in October, has resulted in at least 11 people being admitted to hospitals for treatment, but no deaths have been reported. There are now no FDA-approved therapeutic uses of kratom.

"Scientific data we've evaluated about kratom provides conclusive evidence that compounds contained in kratom are opioids and are expected to have similar addictive effects", FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said. "FDA is concerned that kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, appears to have properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse, and dependence", the alert reads.
