CBP celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a month-long celebration remembering the important contributions that African Americans have made in our nation's history.

Nia Ashari Harris, a sophomore, noticed the stereotypically Black items on the menu and sent an email to the all of the Deans of the school as well as NYU Dining Services, according to The Washington Square News, the school's newspaper. "The menu was interesting with ribs, collard greens, cornbread, smashed yams, and macaroni and cheese", the paper quoted her email. "To see them step up on the stage and shine, that is the biggest reward for me and to give them the opportunity to learn about black history, because it's not something you learn everyday". Earlier this week, the dining hall served food and beverages associated with racial stereotypes, including watermelon-flavored water and red Kool-Aid. The company said the menu controversy was caused by the actions of one employee who has since been suspended. You take a breath.

Hamilton said that the menu, put together by the food services provider Aramark, was not discussed with NYU beforehand.

Within a day, Andrew Hamilton, the university president, had released a statement calling the menu "inexcusably insensitive". "That error was compounded by the insensitivity of the replies made to a student who asked Aramark staff on site how the choices were made".

On a daily basis, Harris said, she and other black students are "doing the same work and were getting the same grades as you, and were doing this extra work, teaching people how to be sensitive to us". It is more likely than not that they acted out of genuine ignorance and not with ill-intentions. However, management is also responsible for not confirming that the proper steps were taken before moving forward with the menu.

This year's theme is "Rise Up To Celebrate Black History".
