The bomb squad and state and federal authorities were called to the hospital to help, and Ellam was transported to Bridgeport hospital with serious burn injuries and is in critical condition. He reportedly set himself on fire, as gas cans were found inside the auto.

"We do not know what this individual's motives are and we will not speculate as to his motives", Drew said.

A vehicle slammed into Middlesex Hospital in Middletown Thursday morning, in what city officials say was an intentional act.

Middletown Mayor Dan drew tweeted investigators believe it was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.

The hospital was placed in an "emergency operations mode", hospital officials said.

"We evacuated patients from our [emergency department] to other portions of our hospital where they will be attended to", Giuffrida said. Residents in the area were told to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

Ellam has an extensive criminal history in CT that goes as far back as 2008, according to WFSB. In 2013 he was also found guilty of attempting to strangle someone.

The FBI is assisting local police in the investigation, according to Fox. The hospital has canceled non-emergent surgeries and outpatient radiology tests that were scheduled for Friday.

"In view of witnesses' announcements, we trust he at that point set himself fire", Drew said.

Hartford Healthcare Officials said this is being done as a precaution at all six of their hospitals, but they do not believe there is any imminent threat at this time.
