President Trump says his son-in-law has been treated very unfairly, says he's sure the White House chief of staff John Kelly will make the right decision on Jared Kushner's security clearance.

The Feb. 9 phone call from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to White House Counsel Don McGahn came as public scrutiny mounted over the number of administration officials without final security clearances.

But CNN reported earlier this month that dozens of White House officials have yet to receive full clearances from federal law enforcement. And more than a year into Trump's presidency, Kushner continues to work under an interim security clearance, which gives him access to highly sensitive intelligence information. "There is no truth to any suggestion otherwise", he said. Those with temporary "top secret" or higher clearances are expected to be bumped down to temporary "secret" clearances, which provide more limited access.

In a statement last week, Kelly said that Kushner would have access to information important to his diplomatic information, but declined to say whether he would get full clearance.

Kushner is now working at the White House with a temporary security clearance and felt personally targeted by Kelly's decision. Issuing exemptions to Kushner "would create a political problem-the White House would have to explain why the president granted an exception to his family".

Kushner has been unable to obtain a full security clearance in part because of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN earlier this week.

"I haven't spoken with the president about whether or not that would be necessary", Sanders said.

The White House has so far refused to clarify why Kushner is operating under an interim clearance.

But on Friday, CNN revealed that Kushner hasn't obtained a full security clearance partly because of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, and that Kushner likely won't receive full clearance while the probe is underway.

He complained that it had taken "months and months and months" for some of his staff members to be given their security clearances, despite the fact that some of them do not have complicated financial backgrounds - a factor that sometimes delays background investigations.

Trump's son-in-law faces Kelly over new restrictions on insider information Google Images Labeled for reuse. Kelly expressed frustration with Kushner's access to classified material on an extended interim clearance, according to the official.

Mark Zaid, an attorney who represents security clearance applicants, said ongoing criminal investigations can derail security clearance applications, even if the applicant is not a target of the investigation.

The information was discovered in the course of Kushner's background check, The Washington Post reported on Friday.
