IPL 2018 Rajasthan Royals to declare team skipper on Star Sports today

Australian swashbuckling batsman Steve Smith has been named the captain of Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While it was expected that Smith was in the problem solving to become the captain of Rajasthan Royals, the club made the announcement on Saturday. Mohammad Kaif, Prashant Chopra and Sanju Samson too graced the event. "Hopefully, we can produce great results", Smith said.

With the Royals having appointed Shane Warne as their mentor, Smith admitted that he is delighted to be working alongside the Australian spin king. They were as close to the championship title as it gets and lost the final to Mumbai Indians by just 1 run. I am looking forward to exciting cricket and a successful campaign. Thanks for giving me the honour and privilege of leading the Royals.

However, Smith has led the Rising Pune Supergiant past year to the final of the IPL 10. In fact, it was at Rajasthan Royals where he first stepped into the shoes of a leader and later took over as Australia captain as he flourished in the role.

In what was a successful season for him, Smith had amassed 472 runs in 15 matches in the last IPL season.

His performance as Australia captain is unblemished.

Royals co-owner Manoj Badale adds that Smith has had a long association with the franchise and can help in the development of the team and the franchise for a long time.

Rajasthan will play their first fixture of the 2018 season against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on April 9.

Former Team India captain and icon player for KKR in the inaugural season of IPL speaking exclusively on the Star Sports Network, the official broadcaster of VIVO IPL has put his faith on Robin Uthappa as a prime captaincy contender for the top job at the Kolkata based franchise.
