American in Custody After Severed Head Is Found in Japan

An examination of the body parts is being conducted to identify the victim, police said.

Authorities found a torso and two arms in the mountains near the western city of Osaka and two legs in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto, some 50km away, according to local media.

The Yomiuri ShimbunSevered body parts have been found in locations indicated by an American man, the Hyogo prefectural police announced Monday.

Security footage reportedly captured the pair meeting at a train station in Osaka around midnight and then entering the apartment building together. Sources cited by Kyodo said a large amount of air freshener had been used inside the apartment but no blood had been found.

The torso and two arms were uncovered in Shimamoto, and the legs were found in Yamashina.

Police found Bayraktar, who was staying in the Higashinari condo unit, in Nara and attested him on suspicion of confining the woman. None of the woman's belongings have been found.

Video records from security cameras and other devices showed that Bayraktar went in and out of the Higashinari condominium several times carrying a large travel bag on February 18.

The U.S. national, who entered Japan in late January, was the last person seen with the 27-year-old woman from Sanda, Hyogo Prefecture. It showed the suspect going in and out with a suitcase, they said.

An American man is under investigation in Japan related to his suspected role in the disappearance of a woman reported missing earlier this month. The Asahi Shimbun reports that another American traveler who booked lodging in the same building because of its low cost "expressed bafflement" upon learning of the severed head.

Bayraktar and the woman had exchanged messages on social media before she fell off the grid. On February 15 she told a...

The police are set to serve a fresh arrest warrant on the man for the disposal and damaging of a body.

He had taken several other women to the same condominium, but police have confirmed that none of them have been harmed.
