Trump Says Some Lawmakers Too Scared Of NRA To Act On Guns

House Speaker Paul Ryan says no to a ban on guns

House Speaker Paul Ryan says no to a ban on guns"for law-abiding citizens

President Trump in a tweet Thursday touted his meeting with a group of bipartisan lawmakers at the White House on gun measures and said he expects a "bill should emerge".

"[The NRA] has great power", Mr Trump said at a bipartisan meeting with members of Congress on school safety.

Minnesota Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar was asking Trump about expanding background checks to cut domestic violence when the president questioned if Toomey could add the proposal as well as Feinstein's to his bill.

Trump, according to the White House, met with the family of Meadow Pollack, an 18-year-old senior at the Parkland, Florida, school who was among the 17 people gunned down February 14, allegedly by a troubled 19-year-old man who was expelled from the school last year.

The Manchin-Toomey bill, which has been circulating since 2013, is different from the more limited "Fix NICS" bill, from Republican Senator John Cornyn and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy. Trump unveiled his top gun and school safety priorities, which included arming highly trained teachers, improving background checks, and raising the age limit for all gun purchases to 21.

Murphy, who has long pushed for stronger gun control, says the question now is whether Trump will follow through on ideas expressed at Wednesday's meeting.

Toomey said the age issue was not addressed in his bill with Manchin.

An NRA spokesperson said of the meeting that while it "made for great TV, the gun-control proposals discussed would make for bad policy". "I think people want to get it done", President Trump said.

"I like taking the guns early", said Trump, adding, "Take the guns first, go through due process second". Trump spent several days last week hearing emotional pleas from parents and students, including some who survived the Parkland shooting, and others who suffered through school shootings in CT and Colorado.

One would allow teachers to carry firearms in the classroom and another would raise the minimum purchase age for military-style assault rifles from 18 to 21.

"The president really could make the difference", Toomey told "Fox and Friends", contending that Republican senators previously opposed are reconsidering their positions.

Despite receiving $30 million in campaign donations from the NRA, Trump told his political counterparts to stop being "petrified of the NRA".

He indicated that he intends to ban bump-stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons. "Because you're afraid of the NRA".

But as Trump took office, the American gun market was approaching saturation. "I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon and I think most of the people in this room would have done that too".
