After questioning, Netanyahu says 'there will be nothing' for police to find

Police question Benjamin Netanyahu over third corruption case

Binyamin Netanyahu said he was confident that "nothing will happen" after he was questioned by police for five hours as part of a corruption investigation.

In Case 3000, which may be even more explosive, several members of Netanyahu's inner circle have been named as suspects, questioned or arrested in what is said to be a corrupt multibillion-dollar submarine deal with Germany.

Media reported that also on Friday, police brought in suspects Shaul Elovitch, chief shareholder of Bezeq, and Nir Hefetz, Netanyahu's confidant and former media adviser, for another round of questioning in the case, and also interrogated a former senior official at the Communications Ministry.

According to the police, Netanyahu and Mozes held talks over an "exchange deal", in which Netanyahu would receive favorable coverage in Yediot Aharonot in return for promoting a law and other measures that would limit the distribution of Israel Hayom, Yedioth's main rival.

Sara Netanyahu and an aide are accused of falsely declaring that there were no cooks available at the prime minister's official residence and ordering from outside caterers at public expense.

The investigation into the case was ramped up in recent weeks, when Shlomo Filber, the ministry's former director general turned state's witness.

About 70 protesters gathered outside the prime minister's residence, demanding he step down. "Let our people go free from all the corruption surrounding the government and the head of it", said Shimrit Orr, 72, a writer, from Tel Aviv. The final decision on both cases could take months.

"A prime minister under investigation can not, and may not, take crucial decisions", said Shuki Cohen, 63, an economist from Moshav Arugot. He calls the allegations against him a "witch hunt" and has said he will seek a fifth term in an election due late next year.

Case 1000 revolves around alleged illicit gifts given to Netanyahu and his family by different businessmen, most notably the Israeli-born Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan.

In return, Walla, a news site controlled by Elovitch, allegedly refrained from criticizing Netanyahu and gave him and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, positive coverage.

So far, partners in Mr Netanyahu's governing coalition have stood by him, saying that they are awaiting the next moves by the Attorney-General.

If investigators discover a promise for favorable coverage, Sarah Netanyahu could be charged. A third think he should remain in office.
