Aly Raisman Sues the US Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics for Negligence

Federal investigations and legislation prompted by Larry Nassar

The suit, which was filed in California, says USA Gymnastics and USOC endangered children and failed to live up to their stated mandate of protecting the athletes in their programs. The Lansing State Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported a year ago that more than a half dozen women or girls raised concerns about Nassar's actions to coaches, trainers, police or university officials between 1997 and 2015.

Despite having the power, authority and mandate to discipline Nassar, there was never any intervention by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Gymnastics or former top USA Gymnastics executives, who were also named as defendants, according to Raisman's lawsuit. She is one of the most decorated gymnasts in US history with a total of six Olympic medals, two team golds at world championships and 13 national championship medals.

Captain of the gold-medal winning 2012 and 2016 US women's Olympic gymnastics teams, Raisman says USA Gymnastics ignored her repeated complaints about Nassar.

USA Gymnastics and the USOC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AP. That was after the disgraced former physician had parted ways with USA Gymnastics following a almost 30-year association, but before he was sacked by Michigan State University, where he spent two decades.

Nassar, who is now serving multiple prison sentences, also worked as a doctor at Michigan State University until 2016.

Moore's attorney Ven Johnson said that after a female gymnast, who was also a minor at the time, entered the basement where Nassar was treating Moore, the doctor pulled down Moore's trousers and exposed him to the girl. Raisman says in the lawsuit that she suffers from anxiety and depression after the abuse.

The abuse occurred during competitions and training, at events where the organizations were responsible for Ms. Raisman's safety and making sure that protocols were followed, the lawsuit said. It also outlined new reforms aimed at protecting its athletes from abuse.

The USOC is conducting an independent review of when former CEO Scott Blackmun and others learned the details about abuse cases at USA Gymnastics and whether they responded appropriately. USA Gymnastics also ended its relationship with the Karolyi Ranch in January and is now searching for a new training center.

Raisman was among dozens of young female gymnasts Nassar has pleaded guilty to molesting.

"After all this time, they remain unwilling to conduct a full investigation, and without a solid understanding of how this happened, it is delusional to think sufficient changes can be implemented", she said in a statement, according to NBC News.
